This past weekend was so amazing! For a couple years I’ve been part of a book-loving group on Facebook. We have exchanged books, read together, and shared book lists. Over a year ago, some of us began to discuss the idea of meeting together in real life. The dream was a weekend of reading, socializing, and discussing books. Well, we finally did it. And it was absolutely fabulous.
Before the retreat, there were a few hiccups. Nothing insurmountable, except we did have one person who was unable to attend because of hurricane related complications. (She and her family are doing fine, but we were sad to miss her.) A couple of other ladies had to miss the weekend at the last minute as well. In the end, there were thirteen of us. We met in a large cabin in the tiny town of Wallsburg, Utah. The mountains were absolutely stunning, as the fall foliage was beginning to turn. There were plenty of places inside and outside the cabin to curl up with a few books for reading or chat with a new friend.
I do think that most of us were hoping for a bit more reading time. I know I envisioned a little more reading. And yet, it was exactly what it needed to be. I made so many connections with the ladies attending and feel that important friendships were truly made over the weekend.
One of the most fun things we did was ask everyone to bring an item to put in goody bags for each other. This was so much fun! There were so many little gifts and each one was fantastic.
On Thursday night, we had a dinner and discussion dedicated to Anne of Green Gables. We had all read the book before the retreat to get ready. We all enjoyed sipping our raspberry cordial and talking about Anne. On Friday we went to town. Book shopping, of course. I can’t believe the finds that I gathered. When we got back to the cabin, we all shared the books we had picked up and purchased. It was a bit like Christmas morning.
Weaving throughout the weekend, we had ongoing discussions about books, characters, and the meaning they have for us. It was gloriously wonderful.
This retreat was so healing for me, and it was just what I needed at just the right time. I hope that you are fortunate enough to have similar experiences.
